Maryland's Three Largest Hospital Systems and Erickson Retirement Communities Collaborate on Health Information Exchange
Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has announced that a joint venture of Erickson Retirement Communities, Johns Hopkins Medicine, MedStar Health, and the University of Maryland Medical System has won the support of the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) to plan for the state-wide Health Information Exchange. Technology partners include HealthUnity, GE Healthcare, and Microsoft.

Technology giants Microsoft and GE Healthcare could soon join Maryland's effort to collect and store patients' health information electronically. One of those projects -- spearheaded by Catonsville-based Erickson Retirement Communities and Baltimore's three largest hospital systems -- has partnered with industry leaders Microsoft, GE Healthcare and HealthUnity to help build and manage the system. The collaboration gives Erickson's proposal a hefty dose of experience and expertise in creating such information exchanges.

A collaborative project between Erickson Retirement Communities and St. Agnes Hospital has established instant patient data exchange between their respective Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, marking the first time in the United States that such a system has been developed between a hospital and a continuing care retirement provider. The health information exchange (HIE) system demonstrates the feasibility of efficient and secure healthcare data interchange while proving the value of technology in health settings.
